North Dakota Trip Huge Success!

The Maxwell UMC Mission Team traveled to Minot, North Dakota August 4 – 11 to help residents affected by the floods last summer.  We stayed at a camp behind a Lutheran Church in campers and ate in a tent.  We put up sheet rock, cleared yards, painted and painted some more.  All of the families that we met were very appreciative of the help we gave them and all were trying to do the best they could on their own but just needed a little more help… We thank God for the opportunity to be his hands during their time of need.  Those participating were; Mark & Pam Travis, Rich & Beth Wehrman, Brian & Autumn Fullerton, Jennifer Whitt, Tessa Findlay, Juanita Loonan & Steph Thompson.

Mission Trip to Tanzania – Summer 2013

The Maxwell Methodist Mission team is going to Tanzania the summer of 2013 after school is out.  The exact date has not been set. The trip will be a 2 week trip involving 2-4 nights in Nairobi, Kenya and a 3 day 2 night camping trip to the Serengeti on safari…and several days of loving 50 orphans.  The children love to play “Hum Batter” (baseball)!  We will be doing some building projects; making milking stations, zero grazing pens and possibly painting and decorating the pediatric ward at a local hospital.  The cost is not cheap!  We are looking at around $2,500 for a round trip ticket and the lodging and some meals while in Tanzania and Kenya.  So start saving your money now!  Please let Pam T. know if you are interested in going or have questions.  pjmtravis@hotmail.com or 515-244- 6652.  We’re also hoping to have an informational meeting in June. It will be a trip of a life time!

Team Members Travel to Colfax IA To Help Flood Victims

On Sept 4, 2010 6 members of our mission team traveled the short distance to Colfax to help with the flood recovery. A gentleman that lived just south of the sale barn in Colfax had his basement flooded and it was full of ceramic supplies from a business his mother had prior to her passing.  It was an overwhelming job for any one person to tackle but with 7 of us working on it we were able to get everything out, power-washed it and bleached the walls and floor in just one day.

Mark & Pam Off to Tanzania

We are so proud to have Mark and Pam Travis going in mission to the Angel House Orphanage in Tanzania. They are both retired this year from their current jobs and are taking a year or two off to do God’s work and serve others.  Pam will be helping as a nurse in the orphanage and teaching while Mark will be the Handyman and help with building projects.  We can hardly wait to hear about their experiences..  Watch for more information on their upcoming blog!

Steph Thompson goes to Haiti

Steph traveled to Haiti Aug 14 – 22, 2010.  She worked with a group of 11 other Methodists from around the state of Iowa.  Their project was to start tearing down damaged parts of the Methodist Church in Thomas, Haiti that was effected by the January earthquake.  The group also held daily bible school in the mornings beginning with 43 children and ending up with around 80 on the final day.  We were pleased to be able to feed these kids a snack and lunch each day.  It was hot, no running water and hard work but Gods love, hands and feet are definitely needed in that country.

Red Bird Missions Team!

14 people traveled to Red Bird KY this June 26th – July 4th. Participants for the 2010 year are:Beth Wehrman, Candis Gardner, Sheri Sharp, Marlene Cummings, Juanita Loonan, Pam Travis, Amanda Coughenour, Steph Thompson, Trevor Sharp, Mark Travis, Jim Loonan, Joe Gardner, Chelsie Coughenour and Josh Sharp.  It is a dream that Pastor Kelly had that we might not only help the people of that area with our talents but may also learn from them on how we can help more here in central Iowa. We had a great trip and help a woman replace a deck in front of her home.  We are sure that it will be well used!..  We also came home with a real understanding of what Pastor Kelly meant in going back.  Several of the women got to work in the Red Bird clothing store and learned a lot about the organization of the shop and how things were done.  We are hoping to use that knowledge to improve and expand our own Open Door in the future.

Sweetheart Dinner Great Fun! Great Food and Fellowship

Thanks to all that attended our Sweetheart Dinner.  It went well and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.  Special thanks to Candis and Pam for organizing the event.  We had about 45 people attend and raised about $370.  Again enough to send another person to Red Bird this summer!

Prom Party Huge Success

On Saturday Jan 30th we held our first Prom Party and were thrilled that there were girls from all over central Iowa that participated.  North Polk, Bondurant, Ames, Ballard, Maxwell and others.  We are very please that over $600 was raised to help our missions team go to KY on a mission trip this summer.  Thanks to everyone that helped in any way.

1532 T-shirts Collected in one Week

Thanks to everyone that helped out with the T-shirt donations for Haiti. We had a surprise donation from Kristi Coughenour of 1300 t-shirts…no they are not all her’s but she received allot from other people. It takes 12 t-shirts to make one bed mat. The final count is 1532 which equals to 127 bed mats! What a wonderful cause for the Haiti people. God bless you all.
